Bespoke Connectivity for Freezing Storage Environments
Operation and management of a global cold storage provider’s wireless network infrastructure as a comprehensive managed service.
Objective
MLR Networks was engaged to design, implement and manage a wireless network infrastructure for a global cold storage provider. The primary objective was to enable the deployment of a new Warehouse Management System (WMS) at their flagship site, operating in extreme temperatures of -20°C. The challenge was to ensure a reliable wireless solution that could handle the demanding environment while providing seamless integration with the WMS.
Outcome
MLR successfully delivered and installed enterprise-grade wireless networks at the client’s flagship site in the UK, with ongoing work for sites in Portugal. Proposals for additional European sites are currently in progress. The solution has significantly improved network coverage and reliability at the flagship site, ensuring that the WMS operates smoothly. Our team also provided ongoing support to optimise the systems as the client’s needs evolve.
Background
-
Client Profile:
A global leader in cold storage and supply chain management, with sites across Europe and beyond. The client’s operations rely heavily on technology and a stable network infrastructure to ensure smooth operations and maintain the efficiency of their cold storage facilities.
-
Problem Statement:
The client needed a reliable and robust wireless infrastructure to support the deployment of a new Warehouse Management System (WMS). This network had to function optimally in extreme cold storage environments where temperatures could reach as low as -20°C.
Objectives
- Provide a wireless network solution that can withstand -20°C temperatures.
- Design and implement a bespoke wireless infrastructure tailored to the client’s specific needs.
- Ensure minimal downtime and reliable performance across all sites.
Solution
Approach:
MLR Networks took on the unique challenge of designing and deploying a wireless network that would operate effectively in the harsh environment of cold storage facilities, where temperatures regularly fall to -20°C. We designed a completely bespoke wireless solution, custom-built to meet the specific needs of the client. The installation required highly specialised infrastructure, including the use of marine-grade cable to withstand the freezing temperatures. This level of expertise and attention to detail allowed us to ensure that the network would perform reliably under extreme conditions. Our team successfully delivered the solution at the flagship site, rigorously testing it in the challenging environment to ensure optimal performance.
Technology Stack:
- Custom-designed wireless network infrastructure.
- Enterprise-grade wireless equipment capable of operating in extreme temperatures.
- Marine-grade cable for reliable performance in freezing conditions.
Results
-
Performance Improvements:
The wireless network has significantly improved coverage and reliability at the flagship site. The WMS operates effectively, with no significant downtime or connectivity issues. The bespoke infrastructure has proven to be durable and reliable, even in the harshest cold storage environments.
-
Business Impact:
The enhanced network infrastructure has allowed the client to deploy their WMS successfully, improving operational efficiency across multiple sites. The ability to rely on a bespoke network solution has provided the client with the flexibility and scalability to expand their system as needed without worrying about network limitations. The project’s success also lays the groundwork for further technological advancements across the client’s European sites.
